How to Get More Followers on Twitter
When you’re first starting out on Twitter (or any new social platform for that matter) it can be very overwhelming to think about how you will attract new followers to your account. I still remember when I first got started on Twitter. I would look at the accounts that had thousands of followers and wonder how the heck they were able to do it. I certainly didn’t think that it would be possible to get to that level.
Should You Buy Followers?
Building a decent sized Twitter following doesn’t happen overnight unless you buy followers. There are many people who will buy followers when first getting started in order to get the ball rolling. They do this so that their account will seem more popular, which should make it easier to attract genuine followers.
The problem with buying followers is that bought followers are not targeted followers. Having followers who are not targeted can be counterproductive since the only reason they followed you was because you paid for them. They are not really going to be engaged with you or be interested in your message. For this reason It is probably a good idea to avoid buying followers.
What to Do Instead
The honest truth is that it can take a lot of time and patience to build a Twitter following. There definitely aren’t any shortcuts that are worthwhile in the long run. The good news though is that there are strategies that you can implement that will help to make the process of gaining targeted followers easier. The following tips will help you find Twitter followers who are targeted, engaged, and interested in what you are offering .
Fully Optimize your Profile
One way to attract new followers is to make sure that your profile is complete and fully optimized. Your profile is usually the first thing that people look at when deciding whether or not to follow you. By ensuring that your profile is completed clearly it increases the chances that people will follow you. If you need more information on how to set up and optimize your Twitter profile feel free to check out my last blog post.
On other social media platforms you could probably get away with posting only a couple of times a day. Twitter, on the other hand, is a very busy social platform. There are about 6,000 tweets that go out every single second on Twitter. Because of this, in order to stand out and be seen you will need to tweet as much as possible.
Definitely make sure that you are consistent with your your tweeting especially throughout the day. Every time you you put a tweet out there it gives you the opportunity to be seen and get noticed by people. Although tweeting as much as possible is is important, it is also important to remember that quality is more important than quantity. Having a lot of tweets is good but if your tweets are not relevant to your audience it ends up defeating the purpose. Which brings us to the next tip.
Share Relevant Content
When people follow you they usually do so because they are expecting a certain type of content from you. Because of this you need to ensure that you do not stray too far from your main topic and make sure you offer what your audience is looking for. Always keep the needs of your audience at top of mind when deciding what type of content to share.
Another strategy is to retweet often. Retweeting and sharing the content of others is important because it helps to build relationships with other people. A lot of times when I share other people’s content I will get tweets thanking me for the retweets and the shares. This is definitely a good way to build relationships and to get people to notice you. Retweeting others will usually get them to look at your profile, decide to follow you, and then to engage with you further in a way that will be profitable to your business.
As mentioned in the first tip it is important to tweet as much as possible but everything you tweet doesn’t necessarily have to be your own content. By sharing other people’s content it can give you something to tweet to your audience which in turn will help you stay at the top of mind and that will help you to stay visible.
Follow Relevant People
A simple way to get people to follow you is to follow them first. Not everyone you follow will follow you back but a good percentage of people will so this can be an effective strategy. In order to attract relevant followers you can follow the people who you are trying to reach. An easy way to find these people is to follow the followers of someone who has the audience that you would like to have. This is a good way to get followers who are actually interested in the content and that you’re sharing.
Something to keep in mind though while you are following a lot of new people is to make sure that you manage your unfollowers. It is important to unfollow the people who don’t follow you back because by following significantly more people then are following you could make you look like a spammer in Twitter’s eyes. Twitter does not like spam at all they go through great lengths to try and avoid it. If your account seems suspicious in any way it could possibly be suspended by Twitter and then you may have a lot of trouble trying to get it reopened again.
There are many tools out there that you can use to find out who is not following you back and unfollow them. If you do a Google search for Twitter unfollower tools a lot of options will come up. Many of these tools have a free option so it will not cost you anything to clear out your unfollowers.
Another strategy for getting more followers is to make sure that you use hashtags with every tweet that you send out. Adding hashtags to your tweets enables them to be found by someone who searches for that hashtag. Say for example, you are sharing something that is related to content marketing and you add #contentmarketing to your tweet, anyone who does a search for #contentmarketing will be able to see your tweet.
Using hashtags helps to give your tweets more exposure and helps your content to get found by the people who are looking for it. Getting more exposure to your tweets more exposure will give you and your profile more exposure which in turn will lead to more followers. If you would like more information on hashtags, stay tuned for my next post which will be about how to use hashtags to gain more exposure for your tweets.
These are some tips that can help you increase your following on Twitter, especially if you’re just getting started or if you’re in a slump where you’re not your follower count has not really been growing lately. You definitely need to make sure that you are being consistent with all of these action items and are doing them on a regular basis. With a platform as busy as Twitter you need to be actively participating every day otherwise your audience will forget about you and will end up unfollowing you.
